SHIPBUILDING SHEET
SHIPBUILDING SHEET

Shipbuilding sheets; They are high-strength sheet steels used in yacht, steel yacht and shipbuilding industries. They are obtained from shipbuilding sheet ingots by applying heat treatments, purification and shaping processes. Its main elements are largely iron and a controlled amount of carbon. It is important to keep the amount of non-metal-based substances such as sulfur, silicon and phosphorus to a minimum in production. The technical characteristics of the steel material are provided by the change in chemical structure. For example; Tensile strength can be increased by changing the amount of carbon in the steel or by adding alloying substances such as chromium, nickel and manganese to the chemical structure. In general, increasing the amount of carbon increases the hardness of steel.

The steel generally used in ship construction is a “mild steel” material that is suitable in terms of price, features and availability. There is no significant change in the mechanical properties of this material, which is suitable for cold and hot forming and welding, during processing. However, at very low temperatures, it loses its impact hardness and becomes brittle, which may cause brittleness (= brittle fracture) in the body. In order for a steel to be used in shipbuilding, it must be inspected, tested and stamped by the classification body that will certify the ship. Classification societies subjected the steels used in shipbuilding to a certain grouping and gave them symbols from A to E. In general, A and B are mild steel types. Dimensions, Thickness; between 4 mm – 100mm, Width; between 1500 mm – 2500 mm and the Length; between 6000 mm -12000 mm.
